When it comes to the art world, artist-dealer relationships are  often fickle and volatile. But the now somewhat outdated idea of exclusive representation has largely left room for more flexible agreements, changing the artist-dealer relationship irreversibly.

But how do these relationships work out? When alot of money is at stake, it is easy to see why dealers are reluctant to give up on exclusivity and  collaborate with one another.

For artists, signing up with different galleries affords enormous advantages, “Multi-representation” can also give artists greater visibility in locations that are relatively far from the major market hubs. In an extremely competitive art market, “multi-representation” can be favorable for both parties, with galleries seeing their business grow as their artists enjoy visibility and exposure on different markets.

The increased resources that come with joint representation can also help artists build institutional recognition and gain entry into biennials.

By maintaining relationships with smaller, local galleries in addition to large international ones, artists can not only achieve success, but ensure that other artists from their communities can someday do the same.
